(12/1/15) Dr. Pastor-Corrales and Dr. Hurtado visited DSU and the MGEL to discuss their different approaches for identifying and combating the rust pathogen in common bean, one of the most important, nitrogen-fixing food crops for developing countries.

His presentation was entitled: “Co-evolution between the rust pathogen and the common bean and implications for the effective management of the rust disease.”

Dr. Pastor-Corrales conducts research on genetic resistance of the common bean (Phsseolus vulgaris) to hyper-variable pathogens, such as those that cause common bean rust (Uromyces appendiculatus), soybean rust (Phakopsora pachyrhizi), and anthracnose (Colletotrichum lindemuthianum). He also studies the virulence diversity resistance genes, and for molecular markers linked to these genes.
